Currently, the IP layer holds the upper hand in the debate about which layer should restore IP services. OXCs with optical fabrics, now recently available, will be key to proving-in optical layer restoration. We demonstrate how a simple and robust restoration method, called ROLEX, will work efficiently in this setting. Within the past year various announcements have been made about the availability of Optical Layer Cross-connects (OLXCs) with purely optical fabrics (OLXC/O). Until just recently, most telecommunications carriers were pursuing the deployment of OLXCs with electrical-based fabrics (OLXC/E). The potential advantages of an OLXC/O are: the line interface can be significantly less expensive than SONET OC-48 or OC-192 line cards, possibly less regenerators or transponders could be required in the network, the product can have more general network application, such as to interface gigabit ethernet or non-SONET signal and the equipment could occupy less office floor space .
