This paper describes Orbix™ 3, from IONA Technologies. Orbix™ is an enterprise ORB which combines the functionality of the core CORBA standard with an integrated suite of services: management, security, naming, messaging, fault tolerance, load balancing and distributed transactions. The paper begins with an introduction and description of the Orbix™ architecture. Subsequent sections describe the services and features in greater detail. A variety of forces in recent years have compelled enterprises to move away from centralized monolithic computing resources and to adopt a flexible, distributed framework for their applications instead. This change has been fuelled by the growing importance of network technology and the competitive advantages associated with linking together different parts of a business in a flexible way. At the same time, it has become clear that complete homogeneity of IT infrastructure across an enterprise is unlikely ever to be achieved.
