Capacity planning is the process of measuring a Web site's ability to serve content to its visitors at an acceptable speed. The purpose of this document is to present the reader with a clear understanding of the role of capacity planning, how to approach it, and how to maintain it. This document also establishes the methodology involved in performing capacity planning, so that you can adapt the test to your own site. This paper serves two audiences. The beginning of the paper defines capacity planning in a non-technical way. The remainder of the paper is very technical and therefore speaks to developers and the technical staff of a Web site.
