Since the publication of the Digital Audio Broadcasting standard (DAB), the broadcaster’s world has discovered a new and efficient method to modulate their signal : the Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (COFDM).

As it was possible to operate COFDM transmitter in Single Frequency Network (SFN), the potential economy in regard to the Radio Frequency planning, has driven the Digital Video Broadcasting project to choose this modulation as the solution to broadcast terrestrially the Digital Television (the European DVB–T standard).

This contribution presents an educational model of the COFDM modulation and especially its ability to implement co-channel transmitters operating in Single Frequency Network (SFN). The author then highlights the new technical challenge the broadcasters have to cope with: to control their SFN networks both in the frequency and time domains.
