This paper describes the functionality behind H.323 that makes it the communications industry choice as a foundation of future multimedia communications. Similar to the H.320 standard that provides comparable functionality in ISDN networks, H.323 addresses call control, multimedia management, and bandwidth management. H.323 is just one of the H.32x series of communications standards that enable multimedia communication across a variety of networks including ISDN (H.320 standard), PSTN (H.324 standard), LAN’s with guaranteed Quality of Service (H.322 standard), and ATM (H.321 standard). With the wide acceptance and recognition of IP as the vehicle for voice and data convergence, H.323 is in the unique position to become the most important and influential communication standard, delivering on the promise of smooth interworking among system components from a vast variety of vendors.
