This paper will discuss the operation of Web caching technology and how cache deployment in real networks can be enhanced through the use of ArrowPoint's Content Smart Web switching technology.

Web caching is a technology which can be used to store the results of Web queries on the client side of expensive network links, eliminating the need for repeat requests to traverse the same pipe twice. This technology may be deployed on the enterprise side of an Internet connection, between the access devices and the backbone links inside an Internet Service Provider (ISP) point of presence, or at a border between ISP networks. Internationally, where bandwidth is extremely expensive, caching has enjoyed tremendous success. It is also beginning to catch on in the U.S. as a means of staying ahead of the bandwidth growth curve as users of the Web transition from dial up to broadband access to the Internet via cable modems and xDSL technology.
