This paper proposes that enterprises can best achieve secure digital infrastructure by treating the entire enterprise as an Extranet containing secure enclaves. With increasing complexity in digital applications and infrastructures, and constant, rapid organizational changes, vulnerabilities and threats are proliferating. The enterprise as one big network globalizes risk. Enclaves address this by identifying critical, securable components and then isolating them into protected enclaves. In even the most secure organizations, information security threats and vulnerabilities are increasing over time. Vulnerabilities are increasing with the complexity of our internal infrastructures: complex structures have more single points of failure, and this increases the risk of multiple simultaneous failures. We are adopting new, untried and partially tested products at ever-increasing rates. Vendors and internal developers alike are relearning the security lessons of the past, one at a time, painful lesson by painful lesson.
