The concept of Web Services has introduced a new and powerful way to invoke methods over the Internet. Developers can now take advantage of the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) technology to allow clients to remotely invoke methods of existing COM objects on an Internet Information Services (IIS) server. Because this new process of invocation is message based, it is language and platform agnostic. What this means for developers is that they can develop the client code and the server objects in whatever language they are most comfortable. The Microsoft® SOAP Toolkit allows developers to quickly and easily expose methods over the Web using this technology on a Microsoft Windows® 2000 server.
