The avenues open to a designer when developing and testing novel electronic circuit models are often limited. Development software for elementary circuit design and analysis exists in abundance and quite often suits the need for quick and easy implementation. These packages, however, are rarely sufficient for complex problem analysis, and it is quickly obvious that enhanced capabilities are required. The low end of analysis tools also includes reference texts and hand computation analysis, both of which are obviously limited in scope.
In the other extreme, highly powerful development environments exist which provide most, if not all, of the functionality required in advanced circuit design. However, even when such powerful tools are applied to problems, the solution cannot be readily dissected, since the software is often too complex to be anything but a “black box”. In other words not all engineers can readily apply high-end circuit software to their work. These tools are unsuitable for predesign or early design iterations, and they are inappropriate in design applications which require more flexibility in the solution.
