The design cycle of telecommunications and network products is getting shorter due to rapid technology changes and fierce competition in the industry. In the design process, the often-over-looked factor is thermal management. This has led to an increase in the amount of redesign involved with products at the final phase of development, and the result have often been delayed product launches. Several factors that need to be considered when designing a reliable thermal management system for communications products are addressed in this article. Communications products need to be designed to operate under a wide range of operating conditions, such as temperature, altitude, and working voltage. Almost all of these products are cooled by forced convection.
