The world throws a wide range of problems at microprocessor-system designers. Power supplies come up in the wrong sequence, ramp up too slowly, and stabilize too slowly. Supply voltages glitch up and down due to external-component loads, or they drift in and out of tolerance as the bus voltages fluctuate or system batteries begin to fail. Peripheral components and boards fail to power up and communicate in synchronization with the needs of the processor. And, in spite of lengthy pre-introduction software analysis, bugs sneak into the system code and are shipped to the field.
