Deregulation and bandwidth-hungry applications are creating unprecedented opportunities to develop the local access network. Meanwhile, new DSL-focused providers like Northpoint and Rhythms NetConnections, and wireless carriers like Teligent and Winstar aim to challenge the incumbents by aggressively targeting small and medium-sized businesses and focusing on customer service. Although their strategies and network requirements vary considerably, a new technology is emerging that promises to facilitate the rollout of broadband services by cable television operators, incumbent telcos, data CLECs and wireless carriers. Passive optical network (PON) technology will become the optical feeder of choice for DSL over copper, cable modems and broadband wireless because it offers the lowest cost, point-to-multi-point transport solution for the local loop.
