It is no exaggeration to say that the Internet has profoundly changed the way we live and work. Today, almost 50% of the U.S. population is online. Data traffic has surpassed voice traffic on public networks. U.S. Internet commerce – a non-entity just a few years ago – is forecast at nearly $1 trillion over the next several years. Internationally, the impact is expected to be equal if not greater. More revolutionary than adoption of the Internet, however, will be the adoption of broadband access. Over the next five years, U.S. Internet households are forecast to grow at an annual rate of about 9%. Over the same period, the number of households with broadband access is forecast to grow by 50% per year! Just as the Internet has profoundly changed the way we communicate, access to broadband networks will open up new opportunities – new applications. Videoconferencing. Streaming media. Tele-medicine.
