The race for space in buildings is on. In-building high-speed access is fast emerging as the next big market for service providers. And Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is fast emerging as the preferred technology for this market, which includes multi-tenant units (MTUs), multi-dwelling units (MDUs), and multi-hotel units (MHUs). To take advantage of this opportunity, service providers need to act now—the first to gain a foothold in a building will hold a clear advantage over latecomers. Buildings offer an easy way to deliver DSL—service providers and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) partner with property managers, install DSL concentrators in building basements, and immediately start offering profitable voice, data, and video services over existing in-building copper pairs. Plus, service providers can enter the in-building market for DSL services for little more than the price of the concentrator. In fact, MTU service providers can achieve profitability by offering as little as one service to three customers per building, or by offering more than one service to two or more customers. This profitability analysis explores this opportunity in more detail.
