Developers and analysts agree that true Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools dramatically enhance C++ productivity, leading to better applications in a shorter space of time. Microsoft has chosen to retain the traditional resource-based approach to C++ development rather than use the drag-and-drop, component-based visual techniques that developers enjoy. It is hard to think of any good technical or productivity arguments for this decision. C++ developers don't like having to downgrade to Basic to prototype their applications and it is certainly not productive to restart an application in C++ after developing a prototype in Visual Basic. The most likely answer is that Microsoft has made a commercial decision to try to sell two tools (Visual Basic and Visual C++) when a single C++ tool with RAD capabilities would be more productive and efficient.
