Using standard UNIX backup utilities for backing up a modern UNIX environment is dangerous, slow, costly, and complex. Tools like tar, cpio, dump, and fbackup were created when UNIX systems were small and the data on a typical UNIX system was not mission critical.

But things have changed, and they changed quickly. Commercialization has caused UNIX systems to support much more data while users demand much higher levels of system availability.
