In this paper, we hypothesize that as technologies are used to overcome these barriers, consumers will begin to adopt the Internet medium as a viable alternative to physical world retailing in some instances. "Intelligent agents" are one way to address such barriers. However, examples like Microsoft Bob and Microsoft's Office Assistant are not very intelligent, and we think that there are better ways to design interfaces that could help online retailers to overcome social "gaps" in the online shopping experience. The power of collaborative filtering or rules-based filtering to replicate elements of the physical world shopping experience is another potential remedy that is just beginning to be discovered.
