Underlying the use of paper documents is an essential disconnection between the information and the ability of an organization to use it. Paper creates "islands of information," competitive information, industry articles, and other knowledge assets that can be ignored, forgotten, or lost. All organizations have islands of information, and paper forms are not the sources of isolation. Every individual in the organization is an island of information, full of vital information that often is not distributed, or not distributed to the people who need it. No matter how critical information might be in theory (e.g., sales projections, a money-saving proposal, an analysis of the potential failure of a key component) it has little value unless it is online in a digital format and easily accessible within the organization.
