Magnetic stripe readers, though nearing commodity status, are becoming increasingly important in capturing data at the point of sale and processing payment transactions. For example, grocery stores' frequent shopper cards, equipped with magnetic stripes, identify their customers and track the effectiveness of promotional campaigns and purchasing trends. Retail customers simply "swipe" or put their cards through magnetic stripe readers to pay for their purchases. Smart cards, used more abroad for payment of goods and transferring cardholder information such as health records, are soon expected to have an impact in the United States. With the number and kinds of cards being used at the point of sale, magnetic stripe reader applications vary.
