Premised-based IP-enabled fax devices essentially incur no usage-sensitive transmission costs other than those that might be imposed by an IP fax-service provider. And while the cost of so enabling a device vary widely, it can generally be justified for fax-intensive environments. Fax over IP (FoIP) requires a "gateway" mechanism that serves as a physical gate between the circuit-switched and the packet-switched networks, i.e. converting from the carefully timed PSTN to the TCP/IP-based packet network. Relevant IP fax standards include T.37 and T.38.
