Microsoft threw the kitchen sink into Windows 2000, trying to make it the OS for everyone. Among its features is one you should take advantage of: virtual private networking. VPN protects data transmissions among Windows 2000 computers--regardless of the workstations' locations. Two VPN protocols are commonly used in Windows 2000: Microsoft's PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) and L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) within IPsec (IP security). Although Windows 2000 supports numerous tunneling protocols--from the archaic Ascend Tunnel Management Protocol to the bare-bones GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) protocol--you'll most likely be using PPTP or IPsec with or without L2TP. If you're concerned only with tunneling IP traffic, PPTP or IPsec will work fine. However, if you want to tunnel other protocols, such as IPX, you'll need to use PPTP or L2TP with IPsec.
