Scripting languages have been part of Unix since its inception but now are being spoken by a broader group. Unix systems administrators use scripting languages to do almost all their systems-administration tasks. In contrast, administrators of Microsoft Win32- and Novell NetWare-based systems probably spend incredible amounts of time and effort trying to do what a Unix pro can accomplish in a few lines of shell script. What qualifies a language as a scripting language? The easy answer is that scripting languages are interpreted languages. Most BASIC implementations, some C and other languages, however, are interpreted yet are not scripting languages. Well, does syntax differentiate scripting languages? Certainly not, as some scripts can be read more easily than your daily newspaper, while others are more difficult to decipher than hieroglyphics.
