An unprecedented convergence of technologies and industries has produced a networking environment more complex and more dynamic than ever before. Of particular interest to the global enterprise, competition has forced lower rates and an abundance of service offerings. With all of today’s choices for network services, the global enterprise has a tremendous opportunity for deriving maximum value from its networking investment. To leverage these new opportunities and derive competitive advantages, the enterprise needs to preserve both a degree of control and the flexibility to enable new applications and services. This paper discusses customer premises equipment (CPE) needed for the global enterprise to enhance control and flexibility. It also discusses the corporation’s traditional needs with respect to fostering outsourced services as a viable, cost-effective, and convenient alternative.
