Still relatively new but rapidly gaining mindshare in the IT/telecom world, UM is client/server software that delivers voice, fax and e-mail messages to a single universal mailbox. On the PC desktop, UM users can view all of their messages at a single glance, decide which are most important, then point-and-click on the e-mail and fax messages they wish to read and the voice messages to which they would like to listen. Voice messages can be played over the speakers of a multimedia PC or over the telephone, and can be handled like e-mail: saved, deleted, replied to, attached to another message, forwarded, etc. – all through simple point-and-click operations. In addition to this graphical desktop client interface, newer UM solutions also support Web browser and telephone interfaces that allow mobile users to access and manage all types of messages any where, any time. Some of the more sophisticated UM solutions also include text-to-speech capabilities that will actually read e-mails and fax headers over the telephone, and can also forward faxes and e-mails to a local fax machine to provide hard copies for users on the road.
