As data dependence increases and data importance shifts to higher levels of classification, the key to providing data analysis and decision-support solutions is a storage best practices management approach. And as many industries redesign their information infrastructures to meet the challenges of the new economy, those who are able to capture resource data and transform it into knowledge about their environment have a decided management advantage. This paper provides a list of storage management practices and describes how Storage Resource Manager can play a role in these practices. Goals to consider while building a storage system include, preventing data loss, offering adequate capacity that can easily scale as storage needs grow, providing fast access to data without interruptions, preparing for equipment failures, using cost-effective technologies. Technology alone, however, cannot solve all the issues that impact an organization’s data strategy. An organization must set up sound practices for individuals to follow.
