Palm/OS and Symbol Technologies, Inc. have brought together an exciting platform for portable computing. This platform, the Symbol SPT 1740 portable computer, is based on a robust and well-established pen-based hardware platform merged with the Symbol Technologies scan engine and the Spectrum 24 wireless LAN. This device will gain tremendous popularity in the future. However, the fact remains that the dominating form factor for this type of portable device is character-based. WaveLink is a development platform for portable computers. The WaveLink platform gives a programmer the ability to create robust wireless applications without having to learn to program specific terminals. This is accomplished using a thin client that knows how to deal with the specific device, its resources, and how to make them available to the application running on a host computer. This allows for ease of software maintenance and deployment.
