The wireless Internet has arrived. One can hardly turn on the news or open the business section without seeing a plethora of ads for product offerings aimed at mobilized data access. There are good reasons for all the excitement. People have come to rely on mobile solutions. Cellular telephones and pagers have become commonplace. The value of being able to communicate without being tethered by telephone wires is obvious. The ability to enjoy the same convenience when accessing electronic data is an exciting proposition. However, trying to browse traditional Web sites with a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or mobile phone is not only tedious, it obviates the true benefits of a mobile infrastructure. Mobile solutions require a different paradigm. The biggest benefits of a mobile strategy are the immediate and ubiquitous access to time sensitive and location specific data, delivered in a form factor appropriate for the device at hand. The freedom of hands-free and vision-free access to data via voice-enablement is another powerful paradigm shift that is especially applicable to a mobile strategy. The ability to safely access pertinent enterprise data while driving or walking allows for a more efficient workday. Also, a voice access/delivery strategy can provide truly ubiquitous access, as information can be retrieved from any POTS phone worldwide. The true value of a wireless strategy comes when consi dering and acknowledging the differences between the mobile computing paradigm and the Internet, as it exists today.
