Technology by itself doesn’t do anything; value is achieved when technology is utilized as a strategic tool to support business objectives. Should a company convert its network infrastructure to increase bandwidth? Should investments be made in application enablers such as enterprise resource planning systems, data warehouses, call centers, or e-business web sites? Should upgrading core operating systems be the priority? Or perhaps Technology Help Desk staff should be increased to better service a growing user base. This report serves to assist organizations in assessing, at a high level, the potential Return on Investment (ROI) of migrating to Windows 2000 Professional. Our focal point is not on providing organizations with total cost of ownership (TCO) formulas, nor do we attempt to calculate ROI. For example, comparative financial measures (such as NPV, IRR, and Payback Period, to name a few) may be used by organizations. Rather, through our focus on the benefits and costs (such as deploying and administering) of Windows 2000 Professional, companies can gain better insight in analyzing impacts on ROI for their unique technical, and business environments. To this end, in-depth scenario tests have been conducted, ROI impacts of specific features and of groups of features have been examined, impacts on an example company have been reviewed, and a set of tools to help corporations refine their conclusions has been provided.
