The R/3 roll-out effort is nothing compared to the effort of managing day-to-day production issues. Even companies experienced in large application deployments are caught unprepared for R/3. They don't realize that support and operations infrastructures used in past roll-outs will be inadequate to manage this huge client/server system. Fortunately, R/3 is made manageable by its underlying services, CCMS and Basis. Although CCMS alone will not be enough to manage R/3 in conjunction with other applications and data it depends on, effective tools are available from system management software vendors such as Candle Corporation. The most exciting of these, CandleNet Command Center (CCC) for R/3 and ETEWatch, analyze and report actual R/3 service levels and take action to improve service.
