We have outlined the necessity, benefits, and practical implementations of the COM technology in the development of data mining applications. The benefits were evaluated from two points of view. With COM technology the user can purchase only the necessary analytical components, utilize a familiar application as a user interface, or embed objects containing the results of a DM exploration in other applications. Also the advent of COM opens up untapped opportunities for developers and integrators of vertical applications. Developers can easily create powerful vertical applications utilizing third parties' or their own existing components, quickly extend the functionality of existing applications, perform the development with widespread tools like Visual Basic, and combine components written in different languages. All these features boost the customized value of applications built with the help of COM technology, at the same time expanding the market for the created components to the broadest possible level.
