In order to be competitive, carriers and Application Service Providers(ASPs) require new service level management tools that provide more control over traffic flow on the network and enable the prioritization of business critical applications. Enterprise customers have a similar need to manage their diverse network traffic flow so that mission critical applications such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and customer response management (CRM) function efficiently. New Service Level Management (SLM) tools provide granular application level traffic flow data and analysis, allowing service providers to offer more reliable and detailed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and a committed information rate for applications called application CIR. Most SLM tools are passive and cannot reliably provide service level and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees beyond OSI layer 4, because they cannot access layer 7, which provides application data. This new SLM infrastructure allows enterprise customers as well as carriers and ASPs to actively prioritize traffic by application and by end user customer.This Guide also discusses the benefits of next generation SLM tools for network outsourcers, ASPs and enterprise customers.
