IBM has upgraded its S/390 line with changes to IMS, DB2 and CICS. It has added e-business connectors for each of those and to MQSeries. The TCO has decreased and large enterprises can either justify adding new processing power or use existing cycles. Enterprise Java Beans have been added. Oracle now has an S/390 version available. The WebSphere line is a viable Web server package based on the popular Apache code. The traditional enterprise entering the e-commerce arena will have few, if any changes in the back-office. If the data already resides on the S/390 or can be ported easily and there is a good cost benefit analysis, the enterprise can deploy an e-business process on S/390 with little incremental cost or time for implementation.
