Oracle9iAS Portal's new product design serves as the first development tool of its kind to incorporate an innovative "portal is the interface" model. By utilizing the tool itself to build the interface, Oracle9iAS Portal serves as an example of what users can build using the product, through easy-to-use wizards and pre-built portlets. This paper introduces the user-centered design process used to arrive at this new model, and offers suggestions and new techniques that can help assure a highly user-friendly portal design and avoid common design traps.
