The IOS Firewall feature set is an option to IOS that is fully integrated into the core operating system. This provides seamless integration between the router operating system and the enhanced firewall features. The enhancements in the Cisco IOS Firewall feature set are based on stateful packet filtering. These enhancements can protect from Denial of Service (DoS) attacks such as SYN floods. In addition, support for protection from Packet Injection is included. Packet Injection (typically using ICMP packets) involves sending a string of packets with a common sequence.
