The purpose of this paper is to address the challenges, as well as opportunities of deploying broadband services to the masses. These concerns range from capacity engineering, IP address management and exhaustion, to security, as well the ability to offer value-added services. The paper focuses primarily on xDSL services as well as broadband cable. Other forms of transport, i.e. wireless, share similar concerns and much of this paper can be applied to that technology. As Broadband services become more available, the providers of these services must be sure that they address both their engineering and business concerns alike. By tailoring their services to meet the different requirements of the consumer, carriers and providers alike can offer choices rather than only a single solution.
