V5.1 and V5.2 are protocols used for a digital loop carrier system (DLC) that operates on E1 circuits (2048 kb/s). The V5.1 and V5.2 specifications encompass all aspects of the functionality of the DLC system. Thus, the terms V5.1 and V5.2 are commonly used to describe a system or the framing on a set of E1 circuits. V5.1 and V5.2 are used by telephone operating companies to provide a uniform interface for a variety of services, and provide better maintainability. The V5.1 protocol operates autonomously on a single E1 circuit, and there are no functions shared across multiple E1 circuits. The V5.2 protocol operates on a group of E1 circuits, and can provide concentration.
