Medium and large corporations have always had problems tracking their inventory which includes their computers and computer peripherals such as the display monitor. The obvious method until now has been to physically go to every employee's desk and take down PC type serial number along with all associated peripherals. This information was probably compared to ancient printouts to determine if who still had what. Often times, a second trip was required to many locations to verify model or serial numbers. Mistakes in capturing or recording this information would take their toll and force this operation to take longer than required.
