As bandwidth requirements grow, Enhanced Service Providers such as ISPs and CLECs will increasingly turn to DS3 links to interconnect their POPs. But existing equipment does not support DS3 connectivity, and traditional DS3 multiplexers do not meet the economic, physical or operational needs of a geographically distributed implementation. These developments are creating a need for a new class of device to provide broadband connectivity for POPs. This paper reviews the requirements for these emerging applications.
