In part two of this series on baselining networks, we investigate the “big picture”—an evaluation of network-specific characteristics. The next article in this series will be devoted to baselining elements specific to the individual network node. In this article, the focus is primarily on Ethernet networks because of the large installed base. Network Collisions - Access to an Ethernet network is regulated by a contention-based algorithm, CSMA/CD. An Ethernet station listens to the network to determine whether there is any traffic present. When the network is clear, it transmits and then listens again to see if the data collides with traffic from any other station. effect on network performance.
