With the advent of semiconductor circuits and the ever-increasing demand for telephone capacity, a new transmission method known as pulse code modulation (PCM) made its appearance in the 1960s. PCM allows multiple use of a single line by means of digital time-domain multiplexing. The analog telephone signal with a bandwidth of 3.1 kHz is sampled, quantized and encoded and then transmitted at a bit rate of 64 kbit/s. A transmission rate of 1544 kbit/s results when 24 such coded channels are collected together into a frame along with the necessary signaling information.
