In past years, the concept of integrating fax machines, video conferencing, or remote LAN access into one network posed a logistical and financial nightmare for any business. Service users were required to purchase separate lines for voice and fax, and a modem (with a dedicated line) to enable data transmission. The increasing demand for bandwidth to support these applications drove the need for an architecture that would enable multiple services to run on a single copper line -- Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). Because ISDN requires only one line to the customer premises, it opens the doors to new applications -Internet access, telecommuting, video conferencing, and remote LAN access. In particular, ISDN provides a considerable payoff for Internet access -- the speed of ISDN minimizes the time you spend staring at the ubiquitous Connect:Host contacted.
