Molecular nanotechnology is predicted to be the most powerful technology yet developed by mankind. It will lead to major changes in our civilization. Three key breakthrus are necessary: nanomanipulation, mechanochemistry, and system design. There is an immense amount of work to be done, but a growing number of people working in the field. There is no question that we will see major steps toward the goal of creating molecular nanotechnology in the next ten years. The premise of this white paper is that nanotechnology is almost certain to spring upon the world in the next 20 years, and with directed research and development, may happen much sooner. The benefits of developing nanotechnology are so great, and the cost to take the first step so comparatively modest, that those people who understand the issues are racing to be first to harness this technology.
