In the late 1980s there was a need for higher performance and higher speed protocol for data networks. Data networks had become reliable and needed less error checking than existing protocols provided. A high-speed protocol was needed for Local Area Network (LAN) to LAN connectivity. Leased lines had provided this connectivity but did not meet the "bursty" nature of LAN traffic and had a substantial cost structure that was proportional to distance. Frame relay was developed to meet these needs. It is a protocol with less overhead and has higher performance than previous protocols. Frame relay is used in both private and public networks. The frame relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) internet-working market is also expanding. This paper describes the frame relay protocol, examines the topologies used, and presents The RadiSys Edge—a robust, high performance, standards-based frame relay solution.
