The technology underlying the practical use of DSP -- hardware, software, and design techniques -- is fast-changing and complex. Designers contemplating the development of products using DSP technology are confronted with a vast array of tools, technologies, and methodologies from which to choose. In this paper, we present a model of the design process for DSP systems, from conception to final implementation. We highlight design considerations that are unique to (or at least very important for) DSP systems. We then explore the various types of high-level tools that are available to aid the designer, focusing on how they fit into the design process and identifying their key strengths and weaknesses.
