Automotive embedded systems are becoming more complex, as shown by the Volvo S80, where 18 control units are connected via two buses. These systems are really distributed real-time embedded control systems and must be engineered appropriately. However, the automotive industry poses a unique challenge, requiring very high reliability and also very low cost for the embedded electronics. Conventional RTOS technology is not sufficient for automotive use, because it fails to provide support for true real-time systems and also imposes unacceptably high production costs. Engineering an automotive embedded system as a hard real-time system, has proved itself today in the Volvo S80 and will prove itself in the future.
