ATM-based networks will become commonplace over the next decade both in the carrier's integrated multiservice networks and as part of user-owned and operated private facilities. ATM will be used to optimize the carriage of traditional network services (Ethernet, IP, etc.) and to serve as the basis for new high performance, high-speed services for the multimedia traffic of the future. This Technology Guide examines the issues confronting manufacturers and carriers as they struggle to conform to the ATM specifications and strive to assure interoperability, QoS compliance, and raw performance in their newly deployed ATM-based WANs and LANs.
