WAN links are typically the most expensive part of the network, and bandwidth allocation can be complex. Oversubscribing to bandwidth could mean that the company is paying for more bandwidth than required, and under-subscribing could result in congestion on the network. Monitoring the WAN links thus becomes very critical. The Remote Monitoring (RMON and RMON2) standards provide powerful traffic analysis, troubleshooting, and trend reporting tools in the local-area networks. However, there are no standards for the WAN. Extending the RMON framework to monitor the WAN links will bring the power of RMON to the WANs.
