This white paper discusses how Fibre Channel technology will change backup strategies and provide improved functionality of automated tape libraries. Two important trends are converging in the data storage market: the emergence of Fibre Channel-based Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions and the increasing acceptance of automated tape libraries. Fibre Channel storage solutions are now shipping and have gained the endorsement of major system vendors in both the UNIX ® and Windows NT ® environments. Fibre Channel is viewed as an improvement over traditional SCSI connections between servers and storage subsystems. By the year 2001, spending on Fibre Channel interfaces will be higher than SCSI for the first time.
