This paper discusses why and how to implement RAID on UNIX ® systems supporting VLDB environments. We will discuss various vendor's products and their differences. We have limited ourselves to the best market leaders, some of them have been researched and tested ourselves and others have been evaluated. We have also limited ourselves further, by concentrating on VLDBs using the ORACLE ® RDBMS. That said, there is nothing to prevent the reader from extrapolating much of the information here to other environments and applications, provided some technical caveats are observed. We have tried to consider non-technical readers in this presentation while presenting the detail required to satisfy the practitioner; we have probably offended both.
