Broadband connections to the Internet, such as DSL and Cable, have been hailed as the solution to the “World Wide Wait.” Broadband service is being rolled out feverishly to homes, small businesses, and corporate remote offices. While DSL and Cable do solve a piece of the performance puzzle, it’s actually the inefficiencies and congestion within the Internet’s vast collection of servers and networks that account for most of the delay. Therefore, faster connections to a broadband service provider’s network do not necessarily result in faster response times when accessing web content that originated across the Internet. This presents a dilemma: broadband services must deliver a demonstrable performance boost to justify the higher retail price, yet performance is primarily determined by forces outside of a service provider’s control.
